- Early June is a lively and festive month in Alfama, with citywide celebrations, open air live music, the aroma of grilled sardines filling the air, and a truly authentic Lisbon atmosphere. The apartment is right in the middle of the celebrations! It’s a fantastic time to experience the city's culture and traditions, and crowds are to be expected.
The apartment is located in a pleasant “patio” (small square) of the Alfama district. From the living room, you enjoy fantastic views to the São Miguel Church towers, typical housing and rooftops and the river Tejo! It is hilly and very quiet (soundproofing limited), except around June when the street parties (festas dos Santos Populares) take place.
The Alfama Quarter is the oldest in Lisbon, and it was founded by the Arabs who named it “Al-hama” (the fountains).
The true charm of these quarters lies in its narrow steep streets ending in sunny squares from which there are stairways leading to typical streets and flowery alleys and fountains.
This is where you can find the most genuine traditional commerce, far away from the big hypermarkets, with neighbourhood groceries, fruit stands, modest restaurants, and all purpose stores. It is located near Portas do Sol and Miradouro de Santa Luzia. The only way to get to know these quarters is to stroll through them.
Above Alfama the imposing, majestic and sober Castelo de São Jorge (Castle of Saint George), crowns Lisbon´s most important eastern hill.
You will need to climb just a few streets to find the Pantheon, or the Flea Market (If you are interested in antique stuff and second hand bargains you can find almost everything at Feira da Ladra flea Market every Saturday and Tuesday in Campo de Santa Clara).
From the apartment you can explore the rest of the city walking to the castle (St. Jorge) or to Baixa, Bairro Alto, Chiado or Santa Clara.
If you decide to go up instead of going down, you will find an astonishing view of the city from Miradouro da Graça or from the one where is the church of St. Maria do Monte da Graça.
You will also be able to visit the Spanish baroque style monastery S. Vicente de Fora.
Near the flat there is public transports like the old fashioned number 28 tram, tram number 12, the mini-bus 37 (their stop are 3 minutes walking distance from the apartment) and it is also at a walking distance to the train station and subway of Santa Apolónia.
Nearby you have all kinds of traditional commerce, bars, restaurants and the traditional Fado houses.
Come and see for yourself!
Caution - 150 euros.
The flat in a pedestrianized zone.
So the taxis/uber/bolt can't take you to the flat but they can drop you up at Largo das Portas do Sol up the hill, where you have a short hike down.
To be clear, the area is hilly with steps and the public lift may not be always working.
